Flower Reference

This is the flower I used as reference to draw the prickly flower design. I referenced this photo when painting in the petals too. You can follow along with what I do in the tutorial or study this image and paint in how you see it.

The Creative Possibilities are endless

Below is all the info you need for adding a top color to your panel. Remember it is just paint and you can always paint over it.

Painting & Carving tips

  • I recommend a flat acrylic like Liquitex Acrylic Gouache or a flat housepaint. Any flat acrylic will work because it is just a thin top layer.

  • Step 1: use the small piece of sand paper to rough the surface of painted panel. The sand paper is taped to the back of the panel.

When adding the top color you are not creating a layer for thickness. It just needs to cover the white. This should be done in 2-4 coats.

Coat paint every 4-5 hours. Even though it will seem dry in 20 minutes, give it time to fully cure before you coat again.

  • If you find imperfections in your paint, like a hair or rough surface, just lightly sand the surface with the included sandpaper.

  • Sketch the design straight to the panel using a pencil or white watercolor pencil.

    Or

Use the piece of carbon paper included to transfer your own design or one of my designs to the panel. The carbon paper can be used many times so hang onto it for future projects.

The tiny piece of rubber is for trying out the carving tool before digging into the paint.

You can download my three included designs by clicking the button below.

  • After my artwork is carved and before I paint in any added depth or details I clean the artwork. There may be some marks left over from the carbon paper or just dirty from all the handling you will do while carving. I usually wash the surface of the panel gently with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser. Dont scrub too hard or it will remove paint. I then rinse off the surface in the sink and dry it off.

Cleaning after an artwork is complete can be done with a can of air.

  • After you are done carving your artwork you can add paint on top of the carved texture to add depth or just more color.

For this I recommend using any acrylic paint, watercolor or gouache.

  • I spray varnish all my artworks when they are complete to give them an extra layer of protection.

If you are using various sheens of paint varnish also will make your entire artwork the same sheen. I typically use matte varnish but you can also try satin or gloss.

Golden makes a great spray varnish or I like Gamvar Matte varnish which is a brush on.

If you use watercolor or gouache on your artwork it is a must to varnish the artwork, since the paint can be removed with water. Varnishing the arwork will make it permanent.
